Esterel Technologies Acquires Telelogic’s Scade Business UnitEsterel Technologies has expanded its offering to become a de facto standard for safety-critical embedded software development tools
Paris, November 23, 2001. Esterel Technologies, a leading supplier of software development tools for electronic components and embedded software, today announced that it has purchased the assets of the Scade business unit from Telelogic (Stockholm Exchange: TLOG). The Scade business unit supplies a Safety Critical Application Development Environment to the Aerospace, Automotive, and utility equipment manufacturers. As part of this agreement, key Scade employees will join Esterel Technologies.
“The acquisition of Scade allows us to extend our offering to raise our share of the market of safety-critical embedded software for the Aerospace and Automotive industries” said Eric Bantegnie, President and CEO of Esterel Technologies. “The Scade assets we acquired from Telelogic fit nicely into Esterel Technologies product strategy, which is based on providing our customers with both a methodology and tools to produce unmatched quality hardware and software products in a record time.”
This acquisition strengthens Esterel Technologies’ position as the leading individual supplier of software tools for the development of formally proven electronic systems and totally safe embedded software. Indeed, Esterel Technologies will be the only company in the world which provides software tools based on Formal Methods with certifiable code according to the DO178B, the most demanding quality standard of embedded software in the Aerospace industry.
High-reliability and safety of embedded software are of critical importance to the Aerospace and Automotive industries. Historically, these industries have depended on high-quality embedded software that the user never tunes. This is changing, however, with cockpit display systems, flight warning systems, fuel management systems, cruise control systems, and smart dashboard systems. For these systems, bad software can result in personal injury, loss of life, or unacceptable loss of property.
“We have been customers of Scade since 1997, and we use it for the flight-control system of A340-600,” said Jean-Pierre Laborie, Senior Vice President, Engineering Systems and Integration Tests of AIRBUS. “We have also used Esterel Studio since September 2001 for the flight warning system of the future A380. Having both Scade and Esterel Studio developed, marketed, and sold through a single company is excellent news to us.”
”Having been customers of Scade since its launch, we use it for the development of safety-critical software in the field of command and control of nuclear power plants. We are pleased to see Scade become part of the core business of a company with an already strong technological background and a customer base in formal development tools for safety critical software”, said Michel Allain, CTO of the Safety Electronic Systems BU at Schneider Electric. “It is clear that Scade benefits from industrial co-operation with both Airbus France (previously Aerospatiale) and Schneider Electric”, he added.
“Embedded software has become essential for integrating more and more intelligence into aircraft. Given the rapid proliferation of embedded intelligence, and the growing complexity of software that implements this intelligence, the Aerospace industry will not be able to manage the safety-critical aspects of avionics systems using the current development methods and tools,” said Patrick Pinganaud, Chief Technical Officer of Dassault Aviation. “Scade and Esterel Studio is an appropriate solution for delivering formal executable specifications, very high test coverage, and correct-by-construction generated code.”
As a shareholder and partner of Esterel Technologies, we are very pleased to see the combined offer of Scade and Esterel Studio deployed in key aerospace, automotive and defense programs, and becoming a de facto standard for safety-critical software development," said Jean Dufour, General Manager of THALES Corporate Ventures. About Esterel Technologies: Esterel Technologies provides electronic systems architects and embedded software designers with a methodology and tools to secure their design flow at the earliest stage, while reducing their overall design and verification costs. Its flagship product, Esterel Studio uses Formal Methods technologies to automate the painstaking work of verifying and testing designs.
